I picked up the book Red Rising by Pierce Brown because I had heard from several others that it was a good read and it is in one of my favorite genres, science fiction and fantasy, dystopian. At first, I had an issue with emerging myself in the story. I believe it was due to Pierce Brown’s unique writing style. It took a bit to get used to but once I did, I found that I could not put the book down.
You follow Darrow a teenager living a life as a helldiver in a mining colony. After some unfortunate events, he finds that he and his people have been living a lie. Driven by wanting justice or revenge he joins forces with a resistance group in order to infiltrate a legendary Institute governed by the ruling class. Pierce Brown did a wonderful job creating the world and society that his characters live in. Which is what I love most about dystopian type stories, you get a chance to explore cultures that are nothing like your own. These types of stories make you wonder if our society could evolve into something like what they have in Red Rising or The Hunger Games or even in Divergent. The story in Red Rising also keeps you guessing. Just when you think you know what the characters are going to do, Pierce Brown changes it up and has them do something completely different. It is an intriguing read and I do look forward to seeing where he takes the story and characters in the next two books. In conclusion I would have to give this book a four out of five stars.
